I’ve been doing a 28-day gratitude challenge while reading the book The Magic by Rhonda Byrne (the same author as The Secret).
For the past four years, I have been doing gratitude just about every single day. However, what I am doing more recently is more detailed and has been giving me so many intuitive realizations. I wanted to share with you what I’ve taken away from this challenge that has helped me feel better mentally, physically and spiritually.
1. GO INTO DETAIL
Instead of just writing what you are grateful for, Rhonda Byrne turns her readers on to write WHY they are grateful for that specific person, place, experience, etc. See the difference in the example below:
I am grateful for my dog.
Instead try something like this:
I am so happy and grateful that I have a dog like Ollie because he is so silly and fills my heart up with so much love and joy.
Do you see the difference that makes? Can you see and feel how much more gratitude I am expressing? The Universe can surely feel the difference as well.
Here are a few outlines for you to build your gratitude around
I am truly grateful for _______________ because _________________________.
With all my heart, thank you for _____________ because ________________.
I am blessed to have _________________ because _______________.
2. SAY THE MAGIC WORDS
Rhonda Byrne outlines that the secret that has been hidden in many religious texts is “gratitude.” How do you show gratitude when someone gives you something? You say ‘thank you!’
Throughout the 28-day challenge, after we write out 10 things we are grateful for we say the magic words “thank you, thank you, thank you.” When I first started doing this I thought it was pretty cheesy, to be honest. However, I stuck with the program and now I love smiling and saying “thank you, thank you, thank you” to God/The Universe after every bullet of gratitude.
3. FEEL THE FEELS
When you truly feel grateful for what you already have The Universe will provide you with more. Wayne Dyer once said “The Universe provides abundantly when you’re in a state of gratefulness.”
If you are not content with your life or what you have, The Universe will give you more to feel discontent about. It is law and you can’t escape it. You can, however, use a gratitude practice to feel contentment and happiness for what you do have. Guess what? Once you start doing that, the Universe will provide you with more. The law works both ways. Might as well use this knowledge to your advantage and start shifting towards a life of contentment and therefore abundance.
4. STAY COMMITTED
This practice is extremely easy and powerful. Some days I wake up on the wrong side of the bed and I feel like there is nothing to be grateful for, but I have built this habit so strongly that I sit down every morning with my coffee and just start writing. You don’t have to overthink it. You can start with something like an eyelash. Just start writing. As you continue, I guarantee you will have a list of 10 things you feel grateful for and you will feel a hell of a lot better than when you started. In The Magic, Rhonda Byrne has you do a list of 10 things. I highly suggest following that recommendation, but if you are having trouble building the habit, start like I did back in 2017 (before I read this book) and just do three things. Once you consistently write out 3 things you are grateful for every day, do 5 things. Once you consistently do that, add more and so on.
If you try this, I would love to hear about your experience! Let me know in the comments below.
